PCV Team joins the celebration at the Deaf Festival

Last Sunday, members of the PCV team were thrilled to attend the annual Deaf Festival, hosted by Expression Australia at Sunshine College West. The event was a vibrant celebration of the diverse and close-knit Deaf community, drawing participants from all walks of life.

The festival was a gathering point for extended family members, parents of Deaf children, and allies, offering a space for connection and support. It also welcomed individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and may not have previously been involved in community events, providing them an opportunity to engage with others in a welcoming environment.

Throughout the day, festival-goers enjoyed a range of activities, including market stalls, interactive activities, and opportunities to learn more about the rich culture and language of the Deaf community. The event was a true reflection of the spirit of inclusion, where everyone could come together to celebrate their shared experiences and foster a sense of belonging.

As part of our involvement, the PCV team set up a stand to share important information about palliative care. We were pleased to have a Deaf interpreter with us, ensuring that attendees who use Australian Sign Language (Auslan) could fully engage with the information and ask questions. It was also an opportunity to share our AUSLAN resources and offer valuable insights into palliative care services and how we can assist individuals and families facing end-of-life care.

The PCV team left the festival inspired by the energy and sense of unity that permeated the day, grateful for the opportunity to connect with such an important and vibrant part of the community.
